Velika Beach is a spot on the east coast of Thessaly, just north of Agiokambos, facing the northern Aegean Sea. This long sandy beach offers similar conditions to its southern neighbour, with direct exposure to the Meltemi (N/NE). The east-facing coast receives the dominant Aegean winds side-onshore to onshore. View of the Sporades islands offshore. Authentic Greek atmosphere away from mass tourism.
Launch from the long east-facing sandy beach. In Meltemi (NE), side-onshore conditions — riding along the coast with an onshore component. In east wind, onshore conditions with more formed waves. The long beach offers plenty of space for rigging and riding. The spot works best in moderate wind — in strong wind, sea conditions become committed.
Moderate to sustained chop depending on the Meltemi. Swell possible in strong east wind from the open Aegean. In moderate wind, pleasant conditions with manageable chop. Clear water. Progressive depth from the sandy beach.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Access from the Thessalian coastal road. Village of Velika with some seasonal services. Parking along the road or in areas near the sandy beach. Easy access.
Potentially strong Meltemi — assess your skills. Swell in sustained east/NE wind. Possible current along the coast. Open Aegean fetch generates committed conditions in strong wind. No specific supervision for water sports.
The Meltemi (N/NE) is the dominant summer wind, arriving side-onshore to onshore on this east-facing coast. The Ossa mountains behind create flow compression that reinforces the coastal wind. East/ESE winds cross the Aegean and arrive directly onshore. Reliable afternoon thermals in summer. Wind conditions similar to neighbouring Agiokambos, with slightly more open exposure to the north.
