Spot de Corconte

Corconte

Corconte

Overview

Corconte / Embalse del Ebro is the best inland kite spot in northern Spain. A large reservoir at 839m altitude, 50 km south of Santander, shared between Cantabria and Castilla y León. Flat freshwater, no waves, no swimmers, no boats — a kitesurf paradise.

Two main zones: Corconte (northeast side, Cantabria) works best with SW wind; and Cabañas de Virtus (southeast side, Burgos) works best with N wind. Between them, they cover most wind directions. Mainly a summer spot (June-September) due to water levels and conditions.

Spot functioning

Summer spot (June-September) — best conditions when thermal winds combine with reservoir water level. The spot is very dependent on water level — launch areas move with the shore. Corconte zone: SW wind, September-October, gusty and often strong. Cabañas de Virtus zone: N onshore or side, thermal in summer, gusty. Shallow throughout — standing-depth.

On the water

Flat freshwater. Shallow — standing-depth in most areas. Sandy/muddy bottom. No waves, no swell. Water temperature cooler than coast due to altitude. No swimmers, no boats — pure kite space.

Parking

Parking at Corconte on the Cantabria side. Cabañas de Virtus access on the Burgos side. Both spots easily accessible by car — about 1 hour from Santander.

Wind specificities

Corconte zone — SW: Side-on. September-October. Gusty, often strong. Depression wind.
Cabañas zone — N: Onshore or side (depending on exact position). Summer. Thermal + other factors. Gusty. Shallow water.
Both spots produce wind through a combination of thermal and topographic effects — not just classic thermal. The hotter the day in summer, the stronger the thermal component.

Hazards

⚠️ Water level varies significantly — the shore changes depending on reservoir level. Multiple launch zones depending on water height.
⚠️ Shallow water — risk of hitting bottom in some areas.
⚠️ Mountain weather can change quickly — wind can be gusty.
⚠️ Cold temperatures at 839m altitude — dress warmly off the water.
