Spot de De Schotsman / Versemeer

De Schotsman / Versemeer

De Schotsman / Versemeer

The Netherlands

51.57 | 3.66

Overview

De Schotsman / Versemeer is a wingfoil and windsurf spot on the eastern shore of the Veerse Meer — a 22km-long inland lake in Zeeland (Walcheren). The Veerse Meer is fully separated from the North Sea and Oosterschelde, resulting in calm, wave-free conditions even in strong winds: ideal for foiling and wingfoiling.

The Schotsman access point is well-equipped: large parking, coin showers, coffee shop from the adjacent RCN holiday park. Water is immediately deep at the shore — direct deep-water entry, good for foilers and experienced riders. When wind is from the south, light chop makes for ideal jump conditions. ⚠️ Official kite zone does not exist on the Veerse Meer — wingfoil and windsurf only officially. Wakeboard cable park to the north: avoid that zone. Booties strongly recommended (oyster banks).

Local association recommendations

Vertigo Sports (main school at Vrouwenpolder, also teaches at Veerse Meer / De Schotsman area) — www.vertigo-sports.com. RCN Vakantiepark De Schotsman (watersports centre on site, windsurfing, kayak, sailing). Wakeboard cable park north of the spot (Veerse Meer cable). Movement Sports on Sophiastrand/Oosterschelde also nearby.

Spot functioning

Wingfoil and windsurf access from the grass and gravel area at De Schotsman. Large parking at the RCN camping. Coin-operated showers. Coffee shop. Two alternative Veerse Meer entry points are near Vertigo Sports: (1) dock near "De Lekkerbek" — sandy section; (2) Oranjeplaat in the southern bend — shallower beginner-friendly spot. Wind directions NW/W/SW/S all allow onshore/cross-shore conditions from somewhere on the lake. Choose launch point based on wind direction.

On the water

Flat to light chop inland lake water — no waves, no swell, no tides. Wind generally lighter than North Sea exposed spots (useful in very strong winds). Deep water directly from shore at De Schotsman — no standing area. Perfect conditions for foiling and wingfoiling all year. With S wind: light chop develops — good for first jumps (intermediate). Salt to brackish water, temperature 15–20°C in summer.

Parking

Parking at RCN Vakantiepark De Schotsman or on the grass side adjacent to the surf spot. Easy car access. GPS: De Schotsman, Kamperland, Zeeland. Coin showers on site.

Hazards

⚠️ Kitesurf is NOT officially permitted on the Veersemeer (small enclosed lake — no official kite zone). Wingfoil and windsurf are allowed. Wakeboard cable park north of spot — stay well clear during sessions (cable area officially reserved). Water immediately deep at shoreline — no standing area at the Schotsman itself. Oyster banks in parts of the Veerse Meer — wear booties. Watch for sailing and motorboats on the lake.

Wind specificities

Wind generally 10–20% lighter than the North Sea coast due to surrounding land masses. Useful on days with 25–30kt forecasts when exposed spots are too strong. S/SW/W/NW/N all produce onshore or cross conditions from somewhere on the lake. Gusty from S directions (wind passes over elevation before reaching water). Steady non-gusty in W/NW. No forecast thermal effects on this enclosed lake.
