Riverton Spit is a natural sand spit at the northern end of Lake Winnipeg, just north of Riverton. This tongue of sand extends into the lake offering a protected sailing area on one side and open lake on the other. The spot is prized by local kitesurfers for its dual exposure: flat water on the sheltered side for progression, and committed conditions on the open lake side with fetch of several dozen kilometers.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Unique dual water body: interior side (southwest) features flat, shallow water ideal for learning. Exterior side (northeast) is exposed to the open lake with chop and waves that can exceed 1 m. Sandy bottom on both sides. The spit allows riders to choose conditions matching their level by picking the right side.
Currents possible around the tip of the spit. Rapid weather changes on Lake Winnipeg — violent thunderstorms in summer. Cold water (15-20°C max in summer). Do not venture too far on the open lake side without experience. Remote from emergency services.
