Alyki

Alyki

Overview

Alyki is a spot on the south shore of the Gulf of Corinth, in the Galaxidi area. Facing north, this spot benefits from excellent exposure to the gulf's dominant winds. The Vardaris (E/NE) arrives side-shore to side-onshore, channeled through the long east-west gulf corridor. North and northwesterly winds cross the gulf to arrive onshore. The water is protected from the open sea by the enclosed gulf, offering limited fetch and relatively flat conditions.

Spot functioning map

Spot functioning

Launch from the north-facing beach. In Vardaris (E/NE), the wind is side-shore — parallel riding along the shore, good tacking conditions. In northerly wind, onshore conditions with moderate chop. Open sailing area on the gulf with about 15 km fetch to the north. The enclosed gulf limits swell development, offering flatter conditions than on the open coast.

On the water

Short and moderate chop typical of the Gulf of Corinth. The limited fetch (15 km maximum north-south) prevents large wave development. In strong Vardaris, more pronounced chop channeled through the gulf. Relatively flat water near the shore, ideal for foiling. No ocean swell.

Parking

Access from the coastal road in the Galaxidi area. Parking available along the road or in areas near the beach. Relatively easy access.

Hazards

Few major dangers — relatively protected spot. Some rocks near the shoreline in places. Ferry and commercial boat traffic in the gulf — stay in the coastal zone. In very strong wind, the channeled chop can become uncomfortable. No beach lifeguard.

Wind specificities

The Vardaris (E/ENE) is the main wind, channeled through the Gulf of Corinth corridor. It arrives side-shore on this section of the south shore, offering consistent and rideable conditions. North/northwesterly winds cross the gulf (about 15 km fetch) to arrive onshore. The Ponentes (W/WNW) from the Gulf of Patras arrives side-shore from the west. Reliable afternoon thermals in summer, reinforcing the dominant wind regime. The Galaxidi area is slightly more protected than spots further west.
