Alta Lake is Whistler's historic lake, located just south of Green Lake in the Sea-to-Sky corridor. It's the oldest and most popular lake in Whistler, surrounded by parks and trails. The southerly thermal wind develops in the afternoon, channelled by the valley. Several public access points including Rainbow Park and Lakeside Park.
Fresh water. Flat to slightly choppy. The lake is about 2.5 km long — moderate fetch along the N-S axis. Sand and mud bottom. Cold water (13-20°C in summer). Moderate depth. More sheltered conditions than Squamish.

Heavy traffic in summer: canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, swimmers. Gusty wind in the mountain corridor. Cold water — wetsuit recommended. The lake is popular and space can be limited on nice days.
