Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island

Overview

Rottnest Island is a paradise island located 18 km off the coast of Perth in Western Australia, accessible by ferry or private boat. The island is a protected nature reserve famous for its quokkas, small endemic marsupials, and its white sand beaches with crystal-clear waters. The best kite spot on the island is Salmon Bay, located to the south. The west face of the bay faces southeast, meaning the prevailing sea breeze arrives cross-onshore from the right. The inside of the bay offers flat water while the center can become choppy depending on wind strength. Average winds are 20 to 25 knots with a water temperature of 20 to 24 degrees C. The windiest months are November to March. The advantage of Rottnest is that you sail virtually alone as few kitesurfers make the effort to come from Perth. The island offers an idyllic setting with dozens of deserted bays and beaches. Bikes can be rented to explore the island. Accommodation and restaurants available in the main village of Thomson Bay.
