Spot de Poroi Wave

Poroi Wave

Poroi Wave

Overview

Poroi Wave is a wave spot on the east coast of Thessaly, just north of Stomio, at the exit of the Tempi valley. As its name suggests, this spot is renowned for its wave conditions, generated by the open fetch on the northern Aegean Sea and east/NE winds. The proximity of the Tempi valley also brings the Vardaris Venturi effect, but it is primarily the sea wind (E/NE) that creates the surfing and wave riding conditions sought here.

Technical details of Poroi Wave spot

Spot functioning map

Spot functioning

Launch from the east-facing sandy beach. The spot works mainly in east/NE wind (onshore) which generates the waves. Best wave riding conditions are in moderate Meltemi (15-25 knots) with formed swell. In Vardaris (NNW offshore), waves are smoothed — perfect conditions for surfing and strapless but DANGER of being blown out. Technical spot reserved for experienced riders in strong wind.

On the water

Formed waves from the Aegean fetch — one of the rare wave zones of mainland Greece. In sustained Meltemi, waves can reach 1-2 m. Conditions are comparable to ocean wave spots thanks to the long fetch. In offshore Vardaris, clean and smooth waves. Sandy bottom — beach break. The name "Wave" is well deserved.

Parking

Access from the coastal road north of Stomio. Parking along the road or in areas near the beach. Village of Poroi nearby with some services. Easy access.

Hazards

⚠️ OFFSHORE wind in Vardaris — risk of being blown out. Shore break sometimes powerful in strong east wind. Rip currents possible on this sandy beach. Waves can be powerful (1-2 m) — spot not recommended for beginners. Pineios river current nearby. Technical spot — carefully assess conditions.

Wind specificities

East/NE winds (Meltemi) cross the Aegean and arrive onshore, generating the wave conditions that make the spot's reputation. The fetch is significant towards the Sporades and the open Aegean. The Tempi valley Venturi effect (Vardaris, NNW) can create offshore wind that smooths the waves and creates perfect surfing conditions — but CAUTION regarding being blown out. The combination of both regimes (onshore Meltemi for waves, offshore Vardaris for smoothing) is unique in mainland Greece.
