Flat to slightly choppy water on Mobile Bay. The bay is vast (approximately 30 miles long by 10 miles wide) offering plenty of space. Average depth is shallow (10-12 feet in the center). Sandy/muddy bottom. Conditions are good in all wind directions thanks to the bay's size. Moderate tidal current. Water is warm in summer (82-86°F).
Tidal currents present in the bay. Maritime traffic — cargo ships, fishing and pleasure boats cross the bay. Stingrays frequent in warm shallow waters. Jellyfish in summer. Alligators possible in marshy areas along the bay shore (rare in open areas). Violent afternoon thunderstorms frequent in summer with lightning risk. "Jubilee" — rare phenomenon where fish and shellfish gather at the shore (harmless but sign of low oxygen in water).
