Kalpitiya Lagoon is Sri Lanka's most famous kitesurfing spot and one of the Indian Ocean's best-kept secrets. Located on the Kalpitiya Peninsula, on the northwest coast of Sri Lanka, this huge lagoon offers exceptional flatwater conditions: flat, shallow and warm water (28-30°C). The main season runs from May to October during the southwest monsoon (Yala), bringing consistent winds of 15 to 25 knots. Kalpitiya is a paradise for beginners and freestylers thanks to its shallow water and ultra-flat riding surface. The atmosphere is authentic and relaxed, far from mass tourism, with eco-friendly kite camps set up along the lagoon.
The lagoon works during the southwest monsoon (May to October). SW to W wind blows cross-shore on this north-south oriented body of water. The lagoon is vast (several kilometers long) and shallow (30 cm to 1.5 m), with a sandy and muddy bottom. No significant tide influence in the lagoon. Sessions typically start late morning when the wind stabilizes. Several riding areas along the lagoon, managed by different camps. Conditions are remarkably consistent from day to day during the peak season.
Warm water year-round (28-30°C), boardshorts or bikini are sufficient. Ultra-flat water surface — among the best flatwater conditions in the world. Depth from 30 cm to 1.5 m allowing standing everywhere. Sandy and muddy bottom — no reef danger. Water slightly murky in places due to the muddy bottom. Ideal conditions for learning, freestyle and foil. No significant current in the lagoon.

Access to the lagoon is mainly from the kite camps set up along the peninsula. Most camps are accessible via a dirt road from the town of Kalpitiya. Tuk-tuks are the most common mode of transport in the area. There's no formal parking — camps offer accommodation and direct access to the lagoon. Transfers from Colombo airport (about 4 hours by road) can be organized by the camps.
Few objective dangers — this is one of the safest spots in the world. Muddy bottom can be slippery. Some submerged fishing stakes in certain areas — check with your camp. Very intense tropical sun — sun protection essential. Mosquitoes in late afternoon — bring repellent. During the southwest monsoon, heavy rain showers are possible in the afternoon. Limited medical infrastructure in the area — the nearest clinic is in Kalpitiya town.
Southwest monsoon (Yala) from May to October, bringing consistent southwest to westerly winds, typically 15 to 25 knots. Wind is strongest and most consistent from June to August. It generally blows all day with afternoon reinforcement from the thermal effect. The wind arrives cross-shore on the lagoon, perfect for riding. A second season exists from December to February with the northeast monsoon (Maha), offering lighter but rideable winds on the other side of the peninsula (ocean side).
