Pranburi is one of Thailand's premier kitesurfing destinations, located about 20 km south of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand coast. Often considered the quieter, more rider-friendly alternative to Hua Hin, Pranburi (specifically the Pak Nam Pran area) offers a magnificent 7 km long sandy beach that caters to all skill levels. The spot has gained a strong reputation among the international kitesurfing community for its consistent wind conditions and relaxed atmosphere.
The main kite area near the Pranburi river mouth benefits from flatter water conditions, especially during mid to low tide, making it an excellent choice for beginners and freestyle riders. Small lagoons form along the beachfront creating shallow, protected areas ideal for learning. Further out, the open sea provides enough chop and small waves for more experienced riders looking for a challenge.
The kitesurfing season mirrors Hua Hin's pattern, running from October to May with the NE monsoon. Peak conditions occur from December to March with reliable 15-25 knot winds blowing nearly daily. The wind at Pranburi is often reported as stronger and more consistent than Hua Hin, thanks to the open beach orientation and minimal terrain obstacles that allow clean, unobstructed airflow.
Several well-established kite schools operate in the area, including GoKite Asia and Kiteboarding Asia, offering lessons, rentals, and guided sessions. The area has a more laid-back vibe than Hua Hin with boutique resorts, beachfront restaurants, and a growing expat community of wind sports enthusiasts.
Flat to slightly choppy water near the river mouth. Small lagoons and sandbanks exposed at low tide create shallow teaching areas. Open sea further out with more chop. Warm water year-round (28-30°C).

Jellyfish are common - wear a rashguard for protection. Watch for fishing nets and boats. Be aware of shallow sandbanks at low tide that can cause injuries during falls.
Consistent side-onshore NE wind during the main season (Oct-May). Clean and steady wind due to the open beach and minimal terrain obstacles. Often stronger and more reliable than nearby Hua Hin, especially from late morning to mid-afternoon.
