Shelter 9 is a kitesurf spot on the south shore of Smithville Lake. This access point offers good exposure to north and east winds with significant fetch. Shelter number 9 serves as a landmark for kiters. Grassy launch area. Alternative to Kite Point when winds are from the north. Season from May to October.
Freshwater with variable visibility. Water temperature from 0°C in winter (frozen) to 27°C in summer. Good fetch toward the north. Muddy to rocky bottom. Moderate to strong chop in high winds. Full 4/3 wetsuit in spring/fall, shorty in summer.

Frequent violent thunderstorms with lightning and possible tornadoes — exit water immediately. Heavy motorboat traffic in summer. Submerged debris in some areas. Copperhead snakes in wooded areas.
