Iona Beach is a regional park on Iona Island at the mouth of the Fraser River, right next to Vancouver International Airport (YVR). A long jetty extends west into the Strait of Georgia. The spot is exposed to W and NW winds from the strait. It's a more open and less crowded spot than Vancouver's urban beaches, with a wilder feel (bird conservation area).
Strait of Georgia water — mix of freshwater (Fraser) and saltwater. Sandy and muddy bottom. Moderate to strong chop depending on wind. Cold water year-round — 4/3 wetsuit minimum. Currents possible at the Fraser River mouth.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Immediately adjacent to YVR airport — very low-flying aircraft. Bird conservation area (Iona Beach Bird Sanctuary) — respect restricted zones. Tidal currents at the Fraser River mouth. Marine traffic (cargo ships, tugs). Soft mud in some areas.
