Fish Stink Island is a kitesurf spot located in the Charlevoix area, Michigan, on Lake Charlevoix. This large inland lake is connected to Lake Michigan by a channel at Charlevoix. Lake Charlevoix, covering approximately 70 km², offers a vast water body with more sheltered conditions than open Lake Michigan. Lake Charlevoix water body, a large inland lake offering flat water to moderate chop conditions. The lake is large enough to develop significant fetch in sustained winds, creating organized chop. Cold water but warming faster than Lake Michigan — full wetsuit required in spring and fall, shorty possible in midsummer. Sandy and rocky bottom depending on area.
Heavy boat traffic in summer with motorboats, sailboats, and jet skis — Lake Charlevoix is very busy. Cold water with hypothermia risk. Shoals and submerged rocks in some areas, especially near islands. Violent thunderstorms possible in summer with lightning risk — exit water immediately. Lake can become rough quickly in strong winds.
