Overview

Sterling State Park is a kitesurf spot located on the western shore of Lake Erie, near Monroe, in southeastern Michigan. It is Michigan's only state park on Lake Erie. The park offers a sandy beach and direct access to the shallow waters of western Lake Erie. Northeast to southeast winds generate waves on the lake. The area is near the River Raisin mouth and coastal marshes that attract abundant wildlife.

Lake Erie water body, the shallowest and warmest of the Great Lakes. East to northeast winds generate waves of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. Lake Erie warms up quickly in summer, allowing riding in a shorty from June to September. Sandy and muddy bottom. Shallow waters create short, steep waves in strong winds. Longshore currents possible along the coast.

Algal blooms possible in summer (toxic blue-green algae). Heavy recreational boat traffic in summer. Commercial shipping on Lake Erie. Violent thunderstorms possible with lightning risk.
