Sailboat Cove is a kitesurf spot on Smithville Lake, the main kite lake in the Kansas City area, north of the city in Missouri. This 29 km² reservoir offers excellent fetch and consistent winds. Sailboat Cove has a boat ramp and good water access. Smithville Lake is the go-to spot for the Kansas City kite community. Season from May to October.

Freshwater with variable visibility. Water temperature from 0°C in winter (frozen) to 27°C in summer. Large lake with good fetch. Muddy to rocky bottom. Variable lake level depending on precipitation. Moderate to strong chop in high winds. Full 4/3 wetsuit in spring/fall, shorty in summer.
Frequent violent thunderstorms in summer with lightning and possible tornadoes — exit water immediately if sky threatens. Heavy motorboat traffic in summer. Submerged debris (stumps, trees) in some areas. Large lake: conditions can deteriorate rapidly. Copperhead snakes in wooded areas.
