Overview

Kitty Hawk Kites - Waves Village is the main kite activity center in the village of Waves on Hatteras Island. Kitty Hawk Kites, the largest adventure sports school in the Outer Banks, operates a kitesurfing center here with lessons, rentals and retail. The soundside spot provides direct access to Pamlico Sound with ultra-shallow water, perfect for learning. It's the ideal starting point for discovering kitesurfing in the OBX. The Waves Village resort features sound-front accommodations, a bar and a kite community atmosphere.

On the water

Perfect flat water on Pamlico Sound — ideal conditions for lessons and learning. Very shallow depth, you can stand for hundreds of meters. Sandy bottom with seagrass patches. Water is warm in summer (78-86°F). The spot is sheltered and conditions are predictable. Large riding area shared with kite school — respect teaching zones.

Hazards

Stingrays in warm shallow water — do the stingray shuffle. Sea nettles (jellyfish) common in summer. Sharp oyster shells — water shoes recommended. Area shared with many beginners and students — ride with caution. Violent afternoon thunderstorms possible in summer with lightning risk.
