Overview

Imagine... 
 25-30 degrees, turquoise water, a white sand beach...
 a constant breeze of 18 to 28 knots in the afternoon...
 and above all: only a few kites on the water.
 Welcome to kitesurfing paradise with about 300 windy days per year!
 
Navigation: The spot is choppy, with flat areas between waves near the shore. You can touch the bottom up to 50-100m from the shore, very convenient for kitesurfing lessons.
Beach: Very secure launch area, on a large stretch of beach without obstacles. The beach is public and it is therefore possible to kite from the Progreso pier to the entrance of Chelem port. Several schools are located along the beach and offer Day Pass with shower / equipment rinsing for a small fee (for example Alpha Kite or Yuckite).

Parking
There is a public parking lot just before the Progreso pier and at the kitesurfing schools.
Wind specificities
You can kite in Progreso almost all year round. The spot works with different types of wind:
Brisa (thermal):
Season: March-August
Direction: side-on (NE)
Kts: 18-25 knots until June, then it decreases during summer (ideal for foiling)
Temperature: 25-35 degrees
Downwind possible along the coast to Chuburna or even Sisal for the more adventurous.
 
Norte:
Season: November-March
Direction: on-shore (N)
Kts: 20-35 kts
Temperature: 15-23 degrees. This is a cold and tempestuous wind and it can therefore be chilly on the water. Neoprene wetsuit (3:2 or 4:3) recommended.
 
Surada:
Season: January-March
This South offshore wind for the Progreso spot allows us to go to the Ria de Chelem, a wave-free lagoon just 15min by car. Here, the wind is onshore and the launch is complicated as it's directly from the port with an electric cable right in the launch area. Schools offer boat trips for lessons.
Kts: 15-35 kts. Very gusty wind that stops abruptly from one minute to the next, generally around noon. You get it: better to get up early to enjoy it :)
Hazards
Watch out for sargassum (local seaweed) which can sometimes invade the beach and create a problem for relaunching the kite if it falls into the water.
