Lake of the Woods is a massive 4,350 km² lake at the Ontario-Manitoba-Minnesota border, near Kenora. With over 14,500 islands, it's a unique aquatic labyrinth. The lake runs N-S with 100+ km fetch. Kenora is Ontario's westernmost city. Wild Canadian Shield landscape with boreal forest.

Fresh water. Flat to rough depending on fetch and wind. Sand, rock and pebble bottom. Variable fetch — enormous in open water (100+ km), limited between islands. Warm water in summer in shallow bays (20-24°C), cold in deep water. Lake can create significant waves in open water.
Complex navigation — thousands of islands and shoals. Submerged rocks. Lake can become dangerous quickly in open water. Remote northwestern Ontario area — distant rescue. Violent storms. Floating logs. Recreational and fishing boat traffic in summer.
