Grand Beach is one of Manitoba's most popular kitesurfing spots, on the east shore of Lake Winnipeg, the world's 10th largest freshwater lake (24,514 km²). Grand Beach Provincial Park is famous for its immense white sand beaches.
The east shore of Lake Winnipeg faces west, receiving dominant northwest winds as side-onshore. The fetch from the west shore can exceed 60 km, generating considerable waves in sustained winds. Grand Beach is the heart of Manitoba's kite scene. Season from June to October.
Fresh water from Lake Winnipeg. Temperature of 18-22°C in summer (shallow south basin heats quickly). Sandy bottom at Grand Beach. Enormous fetch (60+ km) — waves can reach 1-2 m in sustained winds, near-ocean conditions. Very shallow south basin (avg. 9 m). Spectacular sand beach for launching.

Immense lake — ocean-like conditions possible in strong winds. 1-2 m waves frequent. Dangerous shore currents. Violent prairie thunderstorms with lightning. Cold water early and late in season. Numerous swimmers in summer at the provincial park. Blue-green algae frequent.
