Overview

Cable Crossing is one of the most famous kitesurfing spots on Sherman Island in California's Sacramento River Delta. This legendary spot benefits from some of the most powerful and reliable thermal winds in California, blowing from the southwest from May through October. The flat delta waters combined with strong, consistent winds make it a paradise for freeriding and freestyle. Sherman Island is considered one of the best kite spots on the US West Coast.

On the water

Estuary-style water body with flat to slightly choppy conditions. Brackish and murky water, pleasant temperature in summer (18-22°C/64-72°F). A 3/2 wetsuit or shorty works in summer. Muddy and shallow bottom over a large area. Tidal currents can be significant, especially during spring tides. The thermal wind creates regular surface chop.

Hazards

Strong tidal currents in the main channel. Power lines crossing the water body — be careful with jump height. Thermal winds can be very strong (25-35 knots) with gusts. Pilings and submerged structures in some areas. Motorboat traffic, especially on weekends. Earthen levees can create wind turbulence.
