Canadian Hole is THE most famous kitesurfing and windsurfing spot on the US East Coast. Located on the sound side (Pamlico Sound) of Hatteras Island between Avon and Buxton, this legendary spot offers unmatched flat water conditions. Pamlico Sound is the largest lagoon on the US East Coast, with incredibly shallow water (2-5 feet) for miles. The spot gets its name from the Canadian windsurfers who popularized it in the 1980s.
Ultra-shallow Pamlico Sound waters — often waist-deep or less. Sandy and muddy bottom. Mirror-flat water, the best flat water on the US East Coast. No significant tide in the sound. Warm water in summer (up to 86°F), cool in winter. Thermal southwest wind blows cross-shore in the afternoon during summer.

Very frequent stingrays — always shuffle your feet. Jellyfish in summer (sea nettles). Dangerous lightning during summer thunderstorms — exit the water immediately. Muddy bottom that can trap feet at low water. Sharp shells and oysters in places. Very crowded spot in season — watch out for other users.
