Jones Beach is a kitesurfing spot located on the Columbia River, in the lower river section near Astoria, Oregon. This river spot benefits from west thermal winds that blow up the river in summer. The area is tidally influenced due to the proximity of the Pacific Ocean. The water body is estuary-type with conditions accessible to intermediates despite the currents.

On the water

Estuary-type water body with flat to choppy conditions depending on wind. Fresh to brackish water, cool (12-18°C/54-64°F), a 3/2 or 4/3 wetsuit is recommended. Sandy and muddy bottom. Significant tidal currents in the lower Columbia. The river is wide offering plenty of space. Shifting sandbars depending on water levels.

Hazards

Strong tidal currents in the lower Columbia — risk of being swept toward the ocean. Heavy commercial maritime traffic (cargo ships, barges). Cold water — wetsuit necessary. Shifting sandbars and driftwood. Frequent fog in the estuary. Winds can be gusty around river bends. Proximity to the Columbia River Bar — one of the most dangerous in the world.
