Strong tidal currents in the lower Columbia — risk of being swept toward the ocean. Heavy commercial maritime traffic (cargo ships, barges). Cold water — wetsuit necessary. Shifting sandbars and driftwood. Frequent fog in the estuary. Winds can be gusty around river bends. Proximity to the Columbia River Bar — one of the most dangerous in the world.
