Overview

Karioitahi Beach is a huge black sand beach located on the west coast of Auckland, south of the Waikato River. This wild and isolated beach stretches for kilometers, offering unlimited space for kitesurfing and landkite. The west-facing orientation of the beach makes it perfectly exposed to the prevailing winds from the Tasman Sea, under the influence of the Roaring Forties. W, NW and SW winds are powerful and regular, making Karioitahi a reliable spot for kite sessions. The Tasman Sea swell is constant, with waves that can be significant. The vast flat sand at low tide makes it an exceptional spot for landkite and kite buggy. The best season for sailing is from March to November. This spot is reserved for advanced riders due to powerful currents, isolation and lack of infrastructure. There is no beach surveillance or nearby rescue. Access is via rural roads and parking is on the sand. The surroundings offer a wild and preserved landscape typical of the New Zealand west coast.
