Hermanus Lagoon (Klein River Lagoon) is a brackish water lagoon behind Grotto Beach in Hermanus. It's the most popular kite spot in the region, offering perfect flat water in a stunning setting with mountains as a backdrop. The lagoon is ideal for beginners and freestyle thanks to its calm, shallow waters. Hermanus is also the whale watching capital of the world (June-November).
Works in SE from October to March. Lagoon water level varies — when the mouth is open (connected to the sea), the level drops. The lagoon works best when the water level is high. Wind picks up around noon-1pm.

Perfect flat water in the lagoon. Shallow water, sandy bottom. Brackish water at 16-20°C, 3/2 wetsuit often sufficient. No waves or significant current.
Parking at the end of Grotto Beach road. Free access. Safe tourist area. Restaurants and facilities nearby in Hermanus.
The SE (Cape Doctor) blows side-onshore on the lagoon, channeled by the topography. Strength 15-25 knots from October to March. Wind is steady and thermal in the early afternoon. The lagoon is well exposed to SE thanks to the opening towards the sea.
Sea urchins and shells on some bottom areas. Variable water level. Respect swimming zones and other users. Intense sun.
