Overview

Blue Mesa Reservoir is Colorado's largest lake, located in the Curecanti National Recreation Area near Gunnison at 2,285m altitude. This spectacular reservoir nestled in a canyon offers exceptional fetch and powerful channeled winds. Ice-cold water fed by Rocky Mountain snowmelt.

Very cold freshwater (snowmelt), rarely above 15°C even in summer. Large reservoir with significant fetch. Short powerful chop channeled by the canyon. Water level highly variable by season — exposed banks in late summer.

Hazards

Altitude 2,285m — risk of altitude sickness and accelerated dehydration. Ice-cold water — thick wetsuit mandatory, rapid hypothermia if you fall. Violent afternoon thunderstorms with frequent lightning from June to August. Sudden and unpredictable canyon winds. Remote from emergency services.
