Onetangi Beach is the longest beach on Waiheke Island, stretching nearly 2 kilometers of white sand in the Hauraki Gulf. Accessible by ferry from Auckland (35 minutes), this northwest-facing beach offers a paradise setting for kitesurfing with consistent winds and turquoise water. The open exposure to the Hauraki Gulf creates moderate chop and sometimes small waves in strong northerly winds.
The prevailing winds blow from the northeast in summer (sea breeze) and from the southwest in winter. The beach works well with NE to NW winds. Waiheke Island is known for its warmer and drier microclimate compared to the rest of Auckland. The best season for riding runs from October to April.
Onetangi is a spot suitable for intermediate riders. Waiheke Island is famous for its vineyards, gourmet restaurants, and stunning beaches. A kite trip to Waiheke perfectly combines water sports and fine living. Be aware, however, of transporting gear on the ferry.
