Firethorn is a flat water spot on the south side of Hilton Head Island, facing Calibogue Sound. This protected spot offers flat water conditions on the sound, as an alternative to the island's ocean beaches. Vast mud flats and tidal creeks are exposed at low tide, while the calm sound waters provide an excellent playground at high tide. Ideal for freestyle and wingfoil thanks to flat water conditions. The Hilton Head kite community regularly uses this spot.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Flat water on protected sound. Very shallow at low tide with exposed mud flats. Rideable mainly at mid to high tide. Little chop thanks to barrier island protection. Sandy and muddy bottom. Warm water from May to October. Excellent flat water conditions for freestyle.
Sharp oysters and shells on the bottom — water shoes recommended. Tidal currents in creeks and passes. Stingrays possible in shallow waters. Alligators possible in brackish water creeks. Not rideable at low tide. Thunderstorms possible in summer.
