Koppies Dam is a body of water located in the Free State near the town of Koppies, at about 1400m altitude on the Highveld. This dam offers a quiet alternative to busier spots like Vaaldam, with a rural and peaceful atmosphere. Summer thermal winds allow kitesurfing sessions on this flat water expanse.
Freshwater dam that works with summer thermal winds from the north-west to north-east sector. Sessions possible in the afternoon when thermals develop. Smaller body of water than Vaaldam but sufficient for sailing. Water level variable depending on season.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Freshwater and flat. Variable depth depending on dam level. Water temperature in summer 20-24°C, cold in winter. Generally muddy bottom.
Access via secondary roads from the town of Koppies. Parking on natural ground at the dam's edge. Road partly unpaved — a suitable vehicle is recommended.
Like other Highveld dams, Koppies Dam benefits from thermal winds in summer (October to March). Dominant winds come from the north-west to north-east, developing in the afternoon. Strength is typically 15-22 knots. The surrounding flat terrain provides relatively steady wind but thermals can be gusty.
Thunderstorms with lightning in summer — leave the water immediately when a storm approaches. Isolated spot with no rescue — never sail alone. Submerged obstacles possible at low water levels. Thermal winds sometimes gusty.
