Leisure Island is a spot in Knysna Lagoon, near the small residential island of the same name. This area of the lagoon offers excellent flat water conditions, with easy access from Knysna town. The water around Leisure Island is slightly deeper than the Brenton side, with good fetch for SE and NW wind. It is a popular spot for kiters based in Knysna town.
The spot works mainly with SE and NW wind. Flat water at high tide. At low tide, sandbanks emerge and reduce rideable space — check tide times. The area around Leisure Island generally remains deep enough. Rideable in summer (SE) and winter (NW). Ideal for beginners and freestyle.
Open all year round
Beginner
Flat water in the lagoon. Light chop in strong wind. Sandy bottom, depth 0.5-4 metres depending on tide and area. Brackish water, warmer than the ocean (18-23°C). Shorty wetsuit or lycra in summer, 3/2 in winter. No waves.
Parking in Knysna along the Leisure Island road. Easy access from Knysna town centre. Free parking on residential streets. Launch from lagoon shores on the town side. All Knysna shops and restaurants in immediate proximity.
Southeast wind is the main wind, channelled through the lagoon. Northwest wind blows in the opposite direction and works well in this part of the lagoon thanks to sufficient fetch. Typical strength of 15-22 knots in summer with SE. The lagoon creates a channelling effect that regularises the wind. Less turbulence than on the ocean coast.
Sandbanks at low tide — risk of injury and gear damage (foil). Currents in the main lagoon channel. Do not approach the Knysna Heads entrance (very strong and dangerous currents). Bull sharks occasionally present in the lagoon. Boat traffic in the channel — stay in designated kite riding areas.
