Goukamma Mouth is a wild spot located in the Goukamma Nature Reserve, between Sedgefield and Knysna. The Goukamma River mouth flows into the ocean in an unspoiled natural setting. This is an isolated and exposed spot, reserved for experienced riders seeking committed conditions away from crowds. The reserve is home to exceptional fauna and flora, including ancient milkwood forests.
The spot works with SE to SW wind in side-onshore to onshore. The coast is very exposed and conditions are often committing. The mouth offers a transition zone between fresh and salt water, with variable currents. Rideable at all tides but currents at the mouth are stronger on the outgoing tide. Spot reserved for autonomous and experienced riders.
Waves of 1.5-3 metres on the ocean beach. Strong chop in sustained SE wind. Significant currents at the mouth. Sandy bottom. River water is tinted by tannins. Water temperature between 17-20°C. 3/2 wetsuit in summer, 4/3 in winter.

Access via the Goukamma Nature Reserve. Dirt road from the N2. Limited parking at the reserve access point. Reserve entry fee may apply. Walking required to reach the mouth. 4x4 vehicle recommended for some access roads. No facilities on site.
Isolated and exposed spot — main danger. Very strong currents at the mouth, especially on outgoing tide. Powerful shore break. No lifeguard or rescue services nearby. Sharks frequent in this fish-rich area. Difficult land access. Never ride alone. Inform someone of your plans before riding. Reserved for experienced riders.
Southeast wind blows side-onshore, strengthened by the lack of obstacles in this open natural area. The SE regularly reaches 18-28 knots in summer (October-March). Wind can be stronger than at Sedgefield due to acceleration along the exposed coast. Southwest fronts bring very powerful conditions.
