Langebaan is the most famous flatwater kitesurfing spot in South Africa, located in a beautiful lagoon about 1.5 hours north of Cape Town. This protected lagoon offers ideal conditions for beginners and freestylers: flat water, shallow and relatively warm compared to the ocean. The lagoon is part of the West Coast National Park, providing an exceptional natural setting. During the southern summer (November to March), the south-easterly trade winds blow very reliably, creating perfect conditions for progression. Langebaan is the preferred destination for kite schools in the Cape region.
The lagoon works mainly during the southern summer (November to March) with the south-easterly wind. Conditions are very tide-dependent: at high tide, the water is wide and deep with plenty of space; at low tide, large areas of sand and mudflats are exposed, significantly reducing the rideable area. Always check tide times before coming. The best window is usually mid-rising tide to high tide, in the early afternoon when the thermal is established.
Flat and shallow water — ideal flatwater conditions for freestyle and learning. Depth from 50 cm to 2 m depending on tide and lagoon area. Warmer water than the nearby Atlantic Ocean (18-22°C in summer), a shorty or 3/2 wetsuit is enough in peak summer. Sandy and muddy bottom — watch out for sandbars at falling tide. The water can get choppy in very strong wind (30+ knots) but remains incomparably flatter than the ocean.

Several parking areas along the lagoon. The main spot ("Shark Bay" / "The Point") has car-accessible parking. Entry to the West Coast National Park requires a fee (daily rate or annual SANParks card). Arrive early in peak season as parking fills up quickly on windy days. Basic facilities (toilets) are available in the park.
Sandbars and mudflats exposed at low tide that can cause injuries in falls or block your return. Stingrays in the sand — shuffle your feet when walking in the water. Intense sun — sunscreen and lycra are essential. Wind can pick up quickly and surprise beginners. Some isolated rocks in certain lagoon areas. Protected natural area: respect the wildlife (birds, flamingos) and do not ride in restricted park zones.
Same wind system as Cape Town: the south-easterly Cape Doctor, but channeled and accelerated in the lagoon. The thermal wind typically picks up late morning and peaks in the early afternoon (15-30 knots typically). Wind can be enhanced by the Venturi effect in narrow parts of the lagoon. The windiest days reach 35+ knots. Wind blows side-shore in the main part of the lagoon. In winter, north-westerly winds dominate but are less consistent.
