Plettenberg Bay Lagoon is the lagoon formed by the Keurbooms River mouth at Plettenberg Bay. This sheltered water body offers excellent flat water conditions, ideal for beginners and kitesurfing lessons. The lagoon is located just behind Lookout Beach, offering a flat water alternative to the ocean spot. When the tide is high, the lagoon fills up and offers a vast rideable water area. It is the teaching spot of Plettenberg Bay.
The spot works with SE, E and W wind channelled on the lagoon. Flat water at high tide when the lagoon is full. At low tide, the lagoon can drain considerably, making riding difficult. Mid-rising to high tide is the ideal window. Used by kite schools for beginner lessons. Perfect for freestyle and flat water foiling.
Flat water in the lagoon. Sandy bottom, variable depth from 0.3 to 2 metres depending on tide. Brackish water, warmer than the ocean (19-24°C). Light chop in strong wind. No waves. Shorty wetsuit or lycra in summer, 3/2 in winter. Excellent for learning thanks to the shallow depth.

Open all year round
Same parking as Lookout Beach, well maintained. The lagoon is accessible on foot from the main parking. Paid parking in high season. All Lookout Beach facilities nearby (showers, toilets, restaurants). Kite schools present on the lagoon in season.
Very few dangers at this flat water spot. Watch for very shallow areas at low tide. Currents possible near the ocean mouth — stay in the upstream part of the lagoon. Do not get carried out to sea by the outgoing tidal current. Kayak and paddleboard traffic possible in high season.
Southeast wind channels through the Keurbooms River valley and reaches the lagoon. East and ESE wind blows along the lagoon. Typical strength of 15-20 knots in summer. Wind is slightly attenuated compared to the ocean beach (Lookout Beach). W/WNW wind blows in the opposite direction along the lagoon.
