Melkbos Beach (Melkbosstrand) is a long wild beach located north of Big Bay, between Bloubergstrand and the Koeberg Nature Reserve. This spot offers wilder and less crowded kitesurfing conditions than the popular Bloubergstrand beaches. The south-easterly Cape Doctor blows side-offshore to side-shore, creating excellent conditions for wave riding and advanced freeride. The beach is lined with dunes and the atmosphere is more natural, away from urbanization.
Works from October to March with the Cape Doctor. The side-offshore wind creates smoother conditions than the Blouberg beaches but requires more experience as the wind pushes offshore. Works best with moderate southwest swell. All tides but better at mid to high tide. Less crowded spot offering plenty of space.
Cold Atlantic water (12-16°C), 4/3 or 5/3 wetsuit essential. Waves of 1 to 3 meters depending on swell. Sandy bottom with rocky reef zones. Smoother water surface than at Blouberg thanks to the side-offshore wind. Abundant kelp. Lateral current possible.

Open all year round
Parking along Otto du Plessis Drive. The beach is accessible via several paths from the road. Little infrastructure — no restaurants or toilets nearby. Don't leave valuables in your car.
Side-offshore wind that can push you out to sea — risk of not being able to return. Cold water. Powerful waves. Abundant kelp. Rocky reefs in places. Isolated spot without lifeguards. Currents. Proximity to Koeberg nuclear power station (restricted zone to the north). Car break-ins.
South-easterly Cape Doctor, more side-offshore here than on the Bloubergstrand beaches due to the more northwest-facing coastline. Wind of 15 to 35 knots during the season (October-March). The offshore component makes conditions more technical but creates a smoother water surface for wave riding.
