Overview

Brandfontein is an isolated kite spot on the southern Overberg coast, between Agulhas and Arniston. This stretch of wild coast faces south, directly exposed to the Southern Ocean. Conditions are powerful with constant swell and strong wind. The landscape is typical of the south coast — flat, arid and wind-beaten. Spot reserved for advanced riders due to isolation and exposure.

Works in SE, E and S from October to March. Constant southern swell. Waves 1 to 3m. Rideable at all tides. Exposed and powerful spot.

On the water

Big Southern Ocean waves. Sand and rock bottom. Cold water (14-17°C), 4/3 wetsuit recommended. Powerful coastal current.

Parking

Access via dirt road from the R319. Very isolated area — no facilities. Bring everything you need.

Hazards

Total isolation — no quick rescue. Powerful Southern Ocean swell. Strong current. Cold water. Sharks (great whites). Southern right whale breeding area in season.

Wind specificities

SE and E are side-onshore to onshore on this south-facing coast. S is directly onshore. Strength 15-30 knots from October to March. Very reliable wind on this exposed coast. SW also works but often brings bad weather.
