Milnerton Lagoon (Rietvlei) is a flat and shallow body of water located at the mouth of the Diep River, just south of Milnerton Beach. This lagoon offers ideal flatwater conditions for beginners and freestyle, sheltered from the Atlantic Ocean waves. The south-easterly Cape Doctor blows reliably during the southern summer. It's the perfect alternative when ocean conditions on the Bloubergstrand beaches are too committed. Milnerton Lighthouse and Table Mountain provide a stunning backdrop.
The lagoon works from October to March with the Cape Doctor. Water level varies with the tide as the lagoon connects to the sea. At high tide, the water is wide and deep; at low tide, some areas become very shallow. Ideal as a complement to the neighboring ocean beaches — when Big Bay or Kite Beach are too committed, the lagoon remains rideable and safe.
Flat and relatively shallow water (50 cm to 2 m depending on tide). Warmer than the neighboring ocean but still cool (14-18°C) — 3/2 to 4/3 wetsuit recommended. Sandy and muddy bottom. No waves or swell. Perfect flatwater conditions for freestyle and learning. No significant current except near the mouth.

Parking available along the road near the lagoon, close to Milnerton Lighthouse. Easy access from the R27 (Marine Drive). Space is generally sufficient. Don't leave valuables in your car.
Cool water requiring a wetsuit. Slippery muddy bottom in some areas. Current at the lagoon mouth — avoid this area. Occasional debris in the water. Algae in places. Possible theft — don't leave valuables unattended.
South-easterly Cape Doctor channeled into the lagoon. Wind can be slightly lighter than on the exposed neighboring beaches. Blows 15 to 30 knots typically in the afternoon from October to March. The lagoon offers a more sheltered riding surface from gusts than the open coast.
