Brenton-on-Sea is a long sandy beach located west of Knysna, between Buffalo Bay and the famous Knysna Heads. This beach faces south-southwest and offers pleasant wave conditions for wave riding. The village of Brenton-on-Sea is residential and quiet, perched on the cliff above the beach. The view of the ocean and the Knysna Heads is spectacular. It is a well-established spot in the Knysna kite community.
The spot works with SE to WSW wind in side-onshore to onshore. Waves are consistent thanks to the beach exposure. Rideable at all tides, but at low tide the beach is very wide with a long shore break. Best in summer with the SE thermal. Local riders often ride between Brenton and Buffalo Bay.
Waves of 1-2.5 metres depending on swell. Sandy bottom on most of the beach. Good wave riding spot with regular waves. Moderate to strong chop in sustained SE wind. Water temperature between 17-21°C. 3/2 wetsuit in summer, 4/3 in winter.

Open all year round
Parking in Brenton-on-Sea village, at the top of the cliff. Descent to the beach via a path or stairs. Access from the N2 via Knysna, follow signs to Brenton-on-Sea. Free parking. Some shops in the village. The beach is also accessible from Buffalo Bay along the coastline.
Knysna Heads rocks to the east — avoid drifting in that direction. Powerful shore break during large swells. Sharks present in the area (proximity to Knysna Lagoon). Currents along the coast. Access via cliff which can be slippery. No permanent lifeguard service.
Southeast wind blows side-onshore, channelled along the coast. Typical strength of 15-25 knots in summer (October-March). The SE thermal picks up in the early afternoon. Southwest wind is more onshore with stronger conditions. The cliff to the north can create a slight acceleration effect. WSW remains rideable thanks to the beach orientation.
