Fish Hoek is a sheltered bay on the western shore of False Bay, between Muizenberg and Simon's Town. The white sand beach forms a sheltered crescent with relatively calm waters. The spot is valued for its intermediate conditions — the SE wind channels into the bay. Warning: Fish Hoek is in the peak great white shark zone, caution is essential.
Works in SE, SSE and S, from October to March. Low tide offers a wide beach. Wind is often lighter and arrives later than exposed bay spots. Good spot for relaxed sessions.
Relatively calm water in the bay, small waves. Sandy bottom. Water at 16-20°C, 3/2 wetsuit. Pleasant conditions but sharks are a real risk here.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Free parking along the beach. Quiet residential area but car break-ins still possible — leave nothing visible.
SHARKS: Fish Hoek is one of the highest-risk locations for great white shark attacks in South Africa. Several fatal attacks have occurred here. Always follow Shark Spotter alerts. Never ride alone. Avoid dawn and dusk. Car break-ins.
The SE wind is channeled into the bay and arrives side-onshore from the southeast. Strength is generally moderate, 12-22 knots, lighter than exposed spots. The bay offers some protection from gusts. Wind often drops in late afternoon. SSE and S also work well.
