Wilderness is a long sandy beach located in the Garden Route National Park, between George and Sedgefield. It is one of the most beautiful beaches on the south coast, bordered by indigenous forests and lagoons. The beach stretches for several kilometres, offering vast space for kiting. Waves can be substantial during southwest swells. The natural setting is exceptional with the Outeniqua Mountains as a backdrop.
The spot works with southeast wind in side-onshore, mainly from October to March. The beach is vast and allows riding in varied conditions. At low tide, the beach is very wide with a long shore break. At high tide, waves are closer to shore. The spot is rideable at all tides. Best between 12pm and 5pm when the SE thermal is established.
Ocean water with 1-3 metre waves depending on swell. Sandy bottom along the entire beach. Chop in strong SE wind. Waves are regular and suitable for wave riding. Lateral current possible during large swells. Water temperature between 17-21°C. 3/2 wetsuit in summer, 4/3 in winter.

The dominant wind is the southeast, blowing side-onshore on this south-facing beach. It typically picks up in the early afternoon reaching 15-25 knots. The Outeniqua Mountains to the north can create turbulence effects and gusts with northwest wind. Southwest wind accompanies cold fronts and can be strong but unstable. The Touw River valley can locally accelerate the wind.
