Overview

Dolphin Beach is a popular spot on the Bloubergstrand coast, located between Kite Beach and Table View. This wide and open beach offers slightly more powerful conditions than Kite Beach with more waves and swell. The south-easterly Cape Doctor blows side-onshore, providing excellent conditions for freeride, wave riding and freestyle. The spot has a weather station and the infrastructure is well developed with beachfront restaurants and cafes. Stunning views of Table Mountain and Robben Island.

Spot currently open :-)
Spot functioning

Works from October to March with the SE Cape Doctor. Side-onshore wind on this west-facing beach. More committed conditions than Kite Beach with more swell and waves. The spot suits intermediate and advanced riders. Works at all tides — waves are bigger at high tide. Afternoons offer the best conditions when the thermal is at its peak.

Open all year round

Required level

On the water

Cold Atlantic water (12-16°C), 4/3 or 5/3 wetsuit essential. Waves of 1 to 2.5 meters depending on swell. Sandy bottom. Marked chop in strong wind. Lateral current toward the north. Regular floating kelp. Good conditions for wave riding and committed freeride. Frequent dolphin sightings (hence the beach name).

Parking

Roadside parking along Marine Drive. Several restaurants and cafes offer direct beach access. Parking is free but limited on windy days. Don't leave valuables in your car. Public showers available.

Wind specificities

South-easterly Cape Doctor, identical to the entire Bloubergstrand coastline. The thermal wind picks up late morning and blows 15 to 35 knots in the afternoon, sometimes 40+ knots. The local weather station allows real-time monitoring of conditions. Wind can be slightly more consistent here than at Big Bay due to the absence of upstream obstacles.

Hazards

Cold water requiring a thick wetsuit. Shore break can be dangerous at high tide. Lateral current toward the north. Very strong wind possible (35+ knots). Kelp in lines. Dense kiter traffic. Car break-ins in parking. Sharks very rarely reported in the area.
