Kite Beach is the premier learning spot on the Bloubergstrand coast, located between Big Bay to the north and Dolphin Beach to the south. This long sandy beach benefits from the Cape Doctor (south-easterly wind) blowing side-onshore, creating ideal conditions for beginners and intermediate riders. The beach is wide, the bottom sandy and the water shallower than at neighboring spots. Numerous kite schools are set up along the beach, offering lessons and gear rental. The view of Table Mountain from the beach is spectacular.
Kite Beach works mainly from October to March with the SE Cape Doctor. The side-onshore wind blows from the right when facing the sea. The spot works at all tides: at low tide, the beach is very wide with hard sand perfect for launching; at high tide, the shore break is closer. Schools manage the launch and landing zones. Sessions typically start in early afternoon when the thermal kicks in.
Cold Atlantic water (12-16°C), 4/3 or 5/3 wetsuit essential. Moderate waves of 0.5 to 1.5 meters, less powerful than at Big Bay. Safe sandy bottom. Wind chop in strong wind. Moderate lateral current toward the north. The water is shallower than at neighboring spots, which is reassuring for beginners. Occasional floating kelp.

Parking along the coastal road (Marine Drive) near the beach. Kite schools also offer parking and storage areas for students. Parking can be full on strong wind days in summer. Don't leave valuables visible in your car. Showers and toilets available on the beach.
Cold water (12-16°C) — thick wetsuit required to avoid hypothermia. Shore break at high tide. Lateral current toward the north. Wind can be very strong (30+ knots) and unsuitable for beginners in big conditions. Kelp can get tangled in lines. Dense kiter and student traffic — stay alert. Car break-ins — don't leave anything visible.
The south-easterly Cape Doctor blows reliably from October to March, typically 15 to 35 knots. It strengthens in early afternoon with the thermal effect. The wind arrives side-onshore on this west-facing beach, perfect for beginner safety. The windiest days reach 40+ knots. In winter (May-August), north-westerly winds bring storms but are not suitable for kiting here.
