DerdeSteen ("Third Stone") is a renowned reef break located north of Big Bay, on the Melkbosstrand coast. This advanced wave spot offers hollow and fast sections breaking over a rocky reef. The south-easterly Cape Doctor creates side-shore to side-offshore conditions, perfect for kite wave riding. The spot attracts experienced riders looking for quality waves away from the Big Bay crowds. With Eerstesteen and Kamers nearby, this stretch of coast forms a true wave riding paradise.
The spot works when the southwest swell combined with the SE Cape Doctor creates quality waves on the reef. Best from mid-tide to high tide — at low tide, the reef is too exposed and dangerous. Waves break from 1 to 3 meters depending on the swell. Afternoon offers the best conditions when the wind is established. Spot reserved for experienced wave riders.
Cold Atlantic water (12-16°C), 4/3 or 5/3 wetsuit essential. Waves breaking on a rocky reef with hollow and fast sections. Strong currents around the reef. Abundant kelp. Deep water around the reef. Committed conditions requiring good wave riding skills.

Shallow rocky reef that can cause serious injuries. Powerful hollow waves. Strong currents. Abundant kelp that can tangle in lines and fins. Cold water — hypothermia risk. Isolated spot — no lifeguards. Reserved for advanced and expert riders. Sea urchins on the reef.
South-easterly Cape Doctor, slightly more side-offshore here than at Big Bay due to the more northward-exposed coastline orientation. Wind blows 15 to 35 knots during the season (October-March). Best wave riding conditions are with moderate SE (18-25 knots) combined with a southwest swell.
