Rooi Els is a small isolated coastal village at the eastern end of False Bay, at the foot of Clarence Drive pass. The coast is rocky and wild with powerful wave conditions. The spot is exposed and technical, with a spectacular setting between mountain and ocean. Rooi Els marks the transition between False Bay and the Overberg coast.
Works in SE, ESE and E from October to March. Rocky coast, technical access. Waves 1 to 2.5m. Tide strongly influences access.

Powerful waves on rocky bottom. Abundant kelp. Cold water (12-16°C), 4/3 wetsuit. Strong current.
Parking in Rooi Els village. Very small village, limited spaces.
SE and ESE are channeled by Clarence Drive pass and arrive side-onshore to onshore. Strength 15-25 knots from October to March. Gusts possible due to mountainous topography. E also works.
Dangerous rocks. Kelp. Gusty wind. Sharks (great whites in False Bay). Cold water. Strong current. Access road (Clarence Drive) dangerous — rockfalls possible.
