Ervatao is a remote and spectacular wave spot on the southeast coast of Boa Vista Island, Cape Verde. Widely considered the most beautiful spot on the island — a vast pristine beach backed by a small oasis of palm trees, with turquoise water and powerful waves. An old shipwreck visible on the beach adds to the atmosphere.
The spot produces a well-shaped left-hand wave breaking along the beach, perfect for kitesurfing and surfing. Requires a 1.5-hour 4x4 journey from Sal Rei. Zero infrastructure, zero rescue. Advanced to expert riders only.
The beach is an important sea turtle nesting site — respect the environment.
Launch from the vast sandy beach. Main wave is a left-hander along the beach — long rides on good swell days. Directional board essential. Flat sections between sets for freestyle. Can be reached as a downwind from Ponta Antonia. Popular to combine with a BBQ at the oasis with fresh fish.
Open ocean, left-hander over sand and scattered reef. Waves 1–3+ metres. Water 22–26°C, 3/2mm recommended. Stunning turquoise water — one of the most beautiful kite spots in the world.

Open all year round
Main season November to May. Best wave conditions January to April.
Ervatao is on the southeast coast of Boa Vista, roughly 1.5 hours by 4x4 from Sal Rei via the abandoned village of João Barrosa. Cost ~€60 return (€80 via south coast/Curral Velho).
No infrastructure — bring everything. Guided trips from kite schools recommended for first visits.
ADVANCED TO EXPERT ONLY. Side-offshore wind — equipment failure pushes you out to sea. Never ride alone. Powerful waves over sand and reef. Complete isolation: 1.5h from Sal Rei, no rescue, no mobile signal, no hospital on Boa Vista. Strong currents possible. Protected turtle nesting zone. 4x4 can get stuck in soft sand.
NE trade wind blows side-offshore. 15–25 knots in season (November–May). Wind is more regular near the shipwreck area. The side-offshore angle grooms wave faces beautifully. Kites 7–12m.
