Ponta Antonia (also written Ponto António) is a beautiful bay on the north coast of Boa Vista Island, Cape Verde. It's one of the best spots on the island for intermediate riders, offering a rare combination of side-onshore wind, flat water areas and waves.
The bay has a large flat zone between the shore and the wave line, perfect for freestyle practice. Further out, waves develop and increase in size the further you go, providing a natural progression for riders wanting to try wave riding.
Ponta Antonia is a 35-minute drive from Sal Rei by 4x4. The setting is wild and beautiful — a pristine bay with virtually no one around. It's the go-to spot when the offshore wind at Praia Carlota isn't ideal or when you want side-onshore conditions.
Launch from the sandy beach. The inner bay is flat to slightly choppy — great for freestyle and practice. Waves start developing 200–300m out and increase in size further offshore.
Beginners/intermediate: stay in the flat inner zone. The side-onshore wind and flat water make this excellent for progression.
Advanced: venture further out for wave riding. Waves can reach 1–3m on good swell days.
Popular as a downwind destination from Sal Rei or Shipwrecks area.
Flat water near shore transitioning to waves further out. Sandy bottom in the bay, some reef patches. Wave height 0.5–3m depending on swell and distance from shore.
Water temperature 22–26°C. Shorty or boardshorts, 3/2mm on windy days.
Beautiful turquoise water, pristine setting.

Year-round, main season November to May. Best conditions January–April.
Ponta Antonia is on the north coast of Boa Vista, roughly 35 minutes by 4x4 from Sal Rei. The road is unpaved for the last section.
No infrastructure at the spot — no bar, no toilets, no shade. Bring everything you need.
Some kite schools in Sal Rei organize guided trips and downwinders to Ponta Antonia. This is the recommended option for first visits.
Side-onshore wind makes this one of the safer spots on Boa Vista — problems push you toward shore rather than out to sea.
Waves further out: the further you go from shore, the bigger the waves. Know your limits and don't venture too far.
No rescue service: remote spot with no infrastructure. Bring a charged phone and don't ride alone.
Rocky sections: some parts of the bay have reef and rocks. Reef shoes advisable.
No hospital on Boa Vista — only a basic clinic in Sal Rei. Be extra cautious.
The NE trade wind at Ponta Antonia blows side-onshore — the bay faces north, so the trade wind comes from the right side and slightly onto the beach. This is the safest wind orientation on Boa Vista.
Wind strength: 15–25 knots in season (November–May). Kite sizes 8–12m.
The wind is generally cleaner and more constant than at Praia Carlota, as there are no buildings or terrain features to create turbulence.
