Stomio is a spot at the mouth of the Tempi valley (Pineios river), on the east coast of Thessaly, facing the northern Aegean Sea. This unique position at the exit of the Tempi valley creates a remarkable funneling effect: the Vardaris/Meltemi is channeled through the narrow valley between Mount Olympus and Mount Ossa, then accelerated as it exits onto the sea. One of the windiest spots in Thessaly thanks to this natural Venturi effect.
Launch from the sandy beach at the Pineios river mouth. ⚠️ In Vardaris/Venturi (NNW), the wind blows OFFSHORE — reserved for experienced riders able to ride upwind. In east/NE Aegean wind (onshore), much safer and more accessible conditions. The spot offers two zones: the river mouth with flat water, and the open sea with chop. The river current can be noticeable.
At the Pineios river mouth, flat and brackish water — excellent flat water conditions. In the open sea, moderate to sustained chop depending on wind. The Aegean fetch (towards the Sporades) allows swell development in strong east wind. Mix of fresh and salt water at the mouth — murkier water.

Access from the village of Stomio via the coastal road. Parking in the village or in areas near the Pineios river mouth. Some tavernas and services in the village. Easy access.
⚠️ OFFSHORE WIND in Vardaris/Venturi — major risk of being blown out to sea. The Venturi effect can generate gusts at 40+ knots at the valley exit. Pineios river current, reinforced after rain. Floating debris possible at the mouth. In strong east wind, shore break and swell. Spot requiring careful assessment of conditions before sailing. Never sail alone in offshore Vardaris.
Exceptional Venturi effect created by the Tempi valley. The Meltemi/Vardaris (N/NNW) is channeled through the narrow valley between Olympus (2,917 m) and Ossa (1,978 m), creating a 20-40% acceleration at the exit onto the sea. The wind arrives offshore to side-offshore on the coast — CAUTION regarding being blown out to sea. East/NE winds from the Aegean arrive onshore, offering safer conditions. In summer, the two regimes often alternate during the day: Venturi in the morning, sea thermal in the afternoon.
