Kokkari is one of the most famous windsurfing spots in Greece and the Mediterranean, located on Samos's north coast. This small fishing village became a windsurfing legend thanks to the Meltemi channeling with exceptional power through the strait between Samos and Ikaria. The wind is incredibly consistent and powerful, blowing onshore on the pebble beach. Kokkari has hosted international windsurfing competitions since the 1980s.
Rideable May to September, optimal June-August. Historic windsurfing spot, kitesurfing is more recent. Launch from the pebble beach. Several water sports centers offer rental and lessons. Conditions are intense: plan for 5-10m² kites (light wind days are rare). The spot is geared toward intermediate to expert riders due to wind power.
Exposed water with significant waves and chop. Waves build in the strait with moderate fetch, creating short steep chop (1-2m in strong wind). Pebble and rock bottom — be careful with falls. Crystal-clear warm water (24-26°C in summer). Wave conditions ideal for wave-riding in windsurfing.

Currents in the strait in strong wind. Windsurf/kitesurf cohabitation — respect zones. Water sports centers provide safety in season.
The Meltemi channels through the Samos-Ikaria strait with a spectacular Venturi effect, accelerating wind by 20-30%. Wind blows from N/NNW, onshore to side-onshore on the north coast. Consistent 18-28 knots in summer, with days at 30-35 knots in July-August. Reliability is exceptional: 90%+ rideable days in peak season. Wind picks up around 11 AM and can blow until sunset. This is one of the windiest and most consistent spots in the entire Mediterranean.
