Overview

Lagoa das Furnas is another volcanic crater lake on São Miguel, in the east of the island. Similar concept to Sete Cidades — flat freshwater inside a volcanic caldera. Smaller and warmer thanks to geothermal activity (the famous Furnas hot springs are nearby). Protected from ocean conditions. Light wind foiling and kite possible. The "Cozido das Furnas" (stew cooked underground by volcanic heat) is a must-try.
