Risco del Paso is one of the best flat water spots in Europe, located on the south coast of Fuerteventura in the Jandía Peninsula. It's the southern extension of the famous Sotavento beach, home to ION CLUB's kitesurf centre.
The spot's defining feature is a spectacular tidal lagoon that forms during high tide coefficients — a 4km long, knee-to-waist deep stretch of perfectly flat, turquoise water. When the lagoon fills, it's an absolute paradise for beginners, freestylers, and foilers.
Unlike Sotavento (3km north), Risco del Paso is more isolated with no hotels nearby, which means the wind is more regular and less affected by buildings. The NW wind blows side-offshore, compressed between mountains creating a consistent venturi/thermal acceleration.
When the lagoon isn't filled, the ocean side offers choppy to small wave conditions for more advanced riding.
ION CLUB Risco del Paso — full kite centre with lessons, rental, rescue, shuttle. One of the most established centres in the Canaries.
Lagoon: when filled at high tide, the lagoon offers perfectly flat, waist-deep water. Walk upwind, ride downwind, repeat. Perfect for beginners, freestyle, and foiling.
Ocean side: choppy to small wave conditions, cross-offshore. More challenging but excellent for freeride and advanced riders.
ION CLUB provides full services: lessons, rental, rescue, shuttle.
Important: check lagoon availability before going — only works with sufficient high tide coefficient.
Lagoon: flat, turquoise, knee-to-waist deep, sandy bottom. Ocean: choppy to small waves, deeper water.
Water temperature 18–23°C. 3/2mm shorty or full wetsuit.

Open all year round
Year-round. Best wind: May to September. Lagoon: tide-dependent, check coefficients. GKA Kite World Cup and PWA Windsurfing World Cup held annually (usually July).
Risco del Paso is on the south coast of Fuerteventura, about 3km south of the Sotavento/Meliá hotel area. Access by car via the FV-2, then a dirt road to the beach.
ION CLUB centre on site with shuttle service for clients. Parking available near the centre.
From Puerto del Rosario airport: ~75km south (~1h drive). From Costa Calma: ~15 min.
Side-offshore wind: the NW wind blows away from shore. On the ocean side, getting blown out is a real risk for weaker riders. Rescue service available at ION CLUB.
Lagoon depth: the lagoon is shallow but can have deeper channels. Check depth before launching.
Lagoon availability: the lagoon only fills during sufficient tide coefficients — check tide charts before planning. Some days/weeks the lagoon is dry.
Strong wind: the venturi effect regularly produces 20–30 knots, stronger than forecast models predict.
The wind at Risco del Paso is stronger and more regular than at Sotavento. It blows NW side-offshore, compressed between mountains on either side creating a venturi effect, reinforced by thermal acceleration.
Wind strength: 20–30 knots in season. Weather forecasts underestimate the actual wind due to venturi/thermal effects not modelled. Kites 7–11m typical.
Best season: May to September for consistent strong wind. Year-round wind but less reliable in winter.
