The Lagoa de Óbidos is the most famous kitesurfing lagoon in Portugal and one of the best in Europe. Located 1.5 hours from Lisbon and 20 minutes from Peniche, this is Portugal's largest lagoon — over 6 km long, fed by both fresh and salt water.
Two distinct spots:
Top of the lagoon (ocean mouth): a true mirror of water with ultra-constant wind. Perfect for beginners, ultra-flat lovers and trick training. When you want waves, you can exit to the ocean. Closed June 15 to September 15. Doesn't work at low tide or for foil (too shallow).
Inside the lagoon (Escola de Vela area): works year-round, open in summer too. Stronger wind thanks to a Venturi effect. Works for foil. Watch for sea urchins.
Best wind direction: North. South wind makes it gusty. The Nortada blows consistently 15-20 knots in season.
Gear rental and lessons available on the lagoon. Best season: March to October (inside spot year-round).
Open all year round
Beginner
Summer closure: the top of the lagoon (mouth/ocean side) is closed to kitesurfers from June 15 to September 15. Use the inside lagoon spot during summer.
Low tide: the top spot doesn't work at low tide. Too shallow for foil.
Sea urchins: inside the lagoon. Water shoes recommended.
Fines: strict enforcement of kite zones. Gear can be seized for violations.
